Lessons From Our First Summer of Mobile RC Events | Can U Dig It RC Blog

Lessons from the first summer of running a hands-on mobile RC construction and rock crawling attraction.

What Our First Summer of Mobile Events Taught Us

Published by Can U Dig It RC

The first summer of Can U Dig It RC taught us more about the business than months of planning ever could.

It turns out there is a big difference between hobby-grade equipment sitting clean on a workbench and that same equipment being operated for hours by person after person at a public event.

We learned pretty quickly what holds up, what doesn’t, and what customers actually enjoy.

Public Use Changes Everything

Durability became just as important as realism.

A machine that works perfectly for one careful owner can have a very different life when dozens of first-time users run it in a single day.

Gears, steering parts, limit switches, connectors, batteries, remotes, and wiring all became part of the regular maintenance routine.

We also learned that spare parts are not really optional when equipment is part of the business. If a machine goes down during an event, you need a way to get it back into service or replace it quickly.

That first summer helped shape a lot of the equipment choices we still make today.

Keep the Instructions Simple

Most people do not want a long lesson before they can play.

We learned to show guests the few controls they really need, explain the basics, and then let them figure the rest out by doing.

That works especially well because the machines give immediate feedback.

Move the wrong control and you see what happens.

Use too much throttle and the crawler tells you pretty quickly.

For a lot of first-time drivers, the biggest lesson is simply slowing down.

Construction equipment rewards smooth, deliberate movements.

Rock crawling rewards patience, line choice, and control.

Watching Customers Changed Our Assumptions

One of the biggest surprises was how quickly adults got into it.

We expected kids to enjoy the machines.

What we did not expect was how often a parent would start out helping a child and end up completely focused on getting one perfect scoop or making a crawler climb.

That taught us something important.

Can U Dig It RC is not really a kids attraction.

It is a hands-on experience that happens to appeal to kids, parents, hobbyists, and adults who just want to try something different.

Events Helped Us Learn What People Wanted

Mobile events gave us a chance to watch a lot of people interact with the concept in a short amount of time.

We saw which machines drew people in.

We learned how long people wanted to play.

We learned how to keep lines moving.

We learned what needed to be explained and what people could figure out on their own.

And we learned that sometimes the best way to improve the business is simply to watch what customers actually do instead of guessing what they might do.

That First Summer Shaped the Business

A lot of what we know today came from those early mobile events.

Equipment choices.

Battery management.

Setup and teardown.

Customer flow.

Simple instructions.

Spare parts.

How to keep the experience moving.

The mobile side of Can U Dig It RC was not just a way to bring the machines to events. It became the testing ground for the business itself.
